Evaluation of PPCPs/EDs reduction by coupling of activated carbon adsorption and nanofiltration membrane after coagulation pretreatment

    Pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) and endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDs) have aroused increasing concems recently due to their global contamination and potential risk for ecosystem a... 展开>>Pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) and endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDs) have aroused increasing concems recently due to their global contamination and potential risk for ecosystem and human health.The production of potable water from PPCPs/EDs contaminated source was investigated by coupling activated carbon adsorption and nanofiltration membrane process throughout the coagulation pretreatment process.Caffeine (CAF),diclofenac (DCF) and octylphenol (OP) were selected as target compounds and spiked in source water.Coagulation pretreatment was conducted to identified removal mechanisms of the selected target compounds thereby obtaining the optimum coagulant dosage.Activated carbon (AC) was introduced at various levels of dosages to evaluate their respective removal efficiency of target compounds and their adsorption kinetics can be well expressed by the pseudo-second-order model.After optimizing the coagulation and adsorption process,nanofiltration (NF) membrane with a cross-flow module was employed.It can be concluded that the different fates of PPCPs/EDs after sequential treatment coagulation,activated carbon adsorption and NF membrane appears to be mainly controlled by both electrostatic and hydrophobic effects.Finally,AC adsorption and NF membrane play a dominant role in the removal of emerging contaminants.Coupling ofAC adsorption and NF membrane after coagulation pretreatment is one of promising technologies to remove PPCPs/EDs in water treatment plant. 收起<<
